Description

In today’s busy world of high-tech devices and 24-hour news, it’s comforting to know that a place still exists where the pace is just a little slower and the old-fashioned values of Yankee pride still exist. That place is New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, Lake Winnipesaukee in particular, and The Village of Winnipesaukee, one of the first timeshare properties in New Hampshire.

Perched in the trees on a hillside a quarter-mile from Lake Winnipesaukee, The Village of Winnipesaukee offers clean, comfortable accommodations; a friendly and attentive staff; and a superior location for exploring New England. For thousands of years the Native Americans lived off the abundance of the Big Lake, also known as “the smile of the Great Spirit” or “beautiful water in a high place.” With 180 miles of shoreline and over 270 islands surrounded by the White Mountains, Lake Winnipesaukee is now home to countless visitors and the lucky few who call it home. Each season in New Hampshire offers its own distinctly unique personality. Summers teem with families whose days revolve around the cool waters of Lake Winnipesaukee or one of the many pristine lakes in the area including Squam Lake, home to the movie On Golden Pond. Winters bring downhill skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, and tubing to nearby Gunstock Mountain, while hearty ice fishermen whose bob houses dot the many abandoned bays revel in the beauty and solitude of a New England winter.

For the locals, the spring and fall shoulder seasons resonate most. The crowds have returned home, yet the area’s diverse natural beauty abounds. Fall offers the opportunity for peaceful walks under a canopy of vibrant red, yellow, and orange leaves. Apple picking and old-fashioned country fairs bring visitors from near and far to celebrate the seasonal change as they have for generations. Spring brings new beginnings after a long winter, and anticipation of summer.

At The Village of Winnipesaukee, nothing is fancy except the customer service. The resort has received the RCI Hospitality Award for the past 12 years because of a dedicated staff whose goal is to ensure you the best possible vacation experience. All of the units were recently updated. Several offer peek-a-boo views of the lake and fireplaces for taking the chill out of the cool New Hampshire evenings. Each two- or three-bedroom unit includes a full kitchen, two bathrooms, two flat-screen TVs, free WI-FI, and a balcony or patio. As this is a family destination most of the year, the third bedroom or “bunk room” is best suited for kids. Onsite, you will find tennis courts, a seasonal pool, children’s play area, grills, and bocce ball. Due to the topography of the property, most units require several stairs to reach, but our staff is happy to help with luggage. Above all, the Village of Winnipesaukee provides the perfect home base for experiencing the Lakes Region, the New Hampshire and Maine seacoast, and the White Mountain National Forest.

Our motto here is “Go Explore” and our staff will help you find whatever you’re looking for—history, nature, or adventure. A short stroll down the hill from the Village of Winnipesaukee is Weirs Beach, a popular destination reminiscent of the 1950s, with a boardwalk, arcades, restaurants, a scenic railroad station, one of the nation’s oldest drive-in movie theaters, and Wednesday $1 ice-cream cones at the Kellerhaus candy shop. You can sail from Weirs Beach for seasonal day cruises and evening dinner cruises aboard the M/S Mount Washington, a 230-foot passenger cruise boat. A ride on the Mount is a must. Kids will find no shortage of activities at Weirs Beach, with swimming, go-karts, mini-golf, zip-lines, climbing walls, water slides, and the world’s largest arcade, Funspot, just up the road. The more adventurous types can find boat and jet-ski rentals, seaplane rides, parasailing outfitters, paddleboard and kayak rentals, and boat tours on classic vintage “woody” boats. The area is dotted with small towns, each with its own distinctive flavor, begging to be explored. Contrasting with Weirs Beach’s hustle and bustle, Meredith and Wolfeboro feature specialty shopping among quaint New England architecture, while smaller villages along the way allow glimpses into area history. A must-see is the Castle in the Clouds at Moultonborough, an Arts-and-Crafts-style mansion built in 1913-14 on over 5,000 acres overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee and beyond. Take a tour of the mansion, which its original owner named Lucknow. His rags-to-riches-to-rags story will amaze you. The estate has over 28 miles of trails and magnificent gardens. You can stroll its paths, see its waterfalls, or ride horseback just as the original owner did a century ago. Wolfeboro, the oldest resort town in America, sits majestically on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and is home to art galleries, restaurants, and specialty shops. Tour the classic boat museum, the Wright WWII museum, and walk the grounds of Brewster Academy.

In the winter, Wolfeboro offers some of the best cross-country skiing in New England. Nearby, Squam Lake affords a more rustic and quiet experience. At the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, a diverse ecosystem of open meadows, mature forests, and marshes provides a natural habitat for bald eagles, black bears, mountain lions, raptors, river otters, bobcats, and native birds. You may view them through large enclosures along a wandering trail system. Within an hour and a half drive lies the seacoast. Northward from historic Portsmouth, with its eclectic colonial flair, the rugged Atlantic coast gives way to secluded beaches, tidal pools, and rugged cliffs. Cross into Maine and discover picturesque lighthouses, outlet shopping, and quaint fishing villages, and gain insights into our rich colonial history.

Just an hour north of the Village of Winnipesaukee, the White Mountain National Forest dominates the landscape with dense forests, sheer rock cliffs, waterfalls, and hiking trails. The Kancamagus Highway winds through the heart of the forest, providing spectacular panoramic views and some of the best fall foliage in all of New England. Two hours to the south, Boston offers a multitude of attractions. Relive the birth of our nation by walking in the footsteps of our founding fathers along the Freedom Trail, take a Duck Boat tour, attend a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, or explore the ocean depths at the Boston Aquarium. In keeping with our “Go Explore” motto, a car is recommended for getting the most out of your stay at the Village of Winnipesaukee. Manchester airport is just an hour away and offers easy nationwide access through several major airlines.
